New To Braces? Know These Tips For Wearing Them

Anybody that is new to wearing braces likely has concerns about what to expect. Here is what every new braces wearer should know as they get started in their journey of straightening their teeth.

Stock Up On Soft Foods

You are not going to want to be chewing much on your food during those first few days after the braces are put on. That's why it will help to buy foods that are very soft and don't require chewing, such as yogurt, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, smoothies, and soups. In addition, it will help to drink plenty of water with these foods as well, since it helps prevent the food particles from getting trapped within the brackets.

Have Pain Relievers On Hand

It's possible that your mouth will feel very sore after you have your braces put on. You should have pain relievers on hand so that you can take them as needed. Use acetaminophen instead of naproxen or ibuprofen, since those two types of pain relievers can actually impact how your teeth move by reducing inflammation. Acetaminophen will not reduce inflammation and is much better to take during your treatment.

Use An Electric Toothbrush

Now is the time to get an electric toothbrush if you don't have one already. This is because you will need to brush longer than usual to get above and below the brackets, and an electric toothbrush is going to be more efficient at helping you do this. In addition to having timers to ensure that you're brushing long enough, it will do a much better job at getting rid of the plaque that is trapped on your teeth.

Use A Water Flosser

Threading floss between your braces can be tricky and time-consuming. Switching to a water flosser can help get the plaque and debris out from between your teeth, especially right after eating. While a water flosser is not as good as using actual dental floss, you may find it easy to use and encourages daily flossing.

Use An Interproximal Brush

Interproximal brushes are thin wires that have bristles on them, and they are great for getting between your teeth when you don't have access to a water flosser. They come in various shapes and sizes, so you may need a few different ones. The small brushes will fit well between your actual teeth, and the large ones work best for getting between the brackets.
