Insight To Help Improve The Health And Appearance Of Your Teeth And Gums

Taking care of your oral health is one of the most important ways you can help your body's overall health, unfortunately many neglect their oral health. Regular tooth brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist, someone like Kyle J Frisinger DMD, can keep your oral health well-maintained. Along with this regular maintenance, here are some additional tips to improving the appearance of your teeth by natural whitening and preventing gingivitis and gum disease.

Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease is the result of neglecting the cleaning of your teeth and gums. When you don't brush and floss your teeth, they continue to collect and build-up of the sticky film, called plaque. Plaque is a combination of bacteria and food particles that naturally builds on your teeth over time. If you don't remove it by brushing and flossing your teeth each day, it will begin to harden into plaque within 24 to 48 hours. This hard plaque is irritating to your gums, causing them to become inflamed and recede from your teeth. This, in turn, causes pockets to form along your gum lines, where additional plaque collects, further causing inflammation and more gum recession.

Fortunately, tartar is a soft substance that you can easily rub from your teeth, so brushing it off each day is easy. But if you don't remove tartar and it becomes hardened into plaque, you will need to remove it by scraping it from your teeth. This is why visiting your dentist a couple times a year is recommended, which helps to remove this build-up.

You can also use natural oils to help fight bacteria and reduce inflammation. To benefit from this, rub a couple drops of tea tree oil or clove oil onto your gums and teeth. Both these oils have antibacterial properties to fight the bad bacteria responsible for cavities and gingivitis. You can make a homemade tooth treatment with these oils to brush on your teeth daily. Combine a few drops of the oils with some coconut oil, place it onto your toothbrush and brush it on your teeth and gums each day.

Drinking unsweetened green tea is also beneficial to help boost the health of your gums and keep your teeth clean, as green tea contains polyphenols to fight gum disease bacteria. You can drink several cups of tea throughout the day to receive the benefits of green tea.

Whiten the Appearance of Your Teeth

As you age, the enamel of your teeth begins to yellow with age, causing you to look older and your smile to decrease in appearance. Smoking and eating tooth-staining foods and drinks can also cause the exterior of your teeth to yellow. Just as coconut oil can help reduce gum disease and inflammation, using it in oil pulling can also improve the appearance of your teeth by whitening them naturally.

Try oil pulling each day to whiten your teeth without the negative effects that many over-the-counter tooth whitening products can cause. Take one to two teaspoons of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around for 15 to 20 minutes. Spit it into the trash and rinse your mouth with clean water. While swishing, the oil traps toxins and bacteria. Oil pulling not only whitens your teeth without making them more sensitive, it also boosts your body's health in several other ways and even fights bad breath.

You can also make a homemade tooth whitening paste with coconut oil. Combine one-forth cup MCT coconut oil, three tablespoons Xylitol powder and one-forth cup of calcium carbonate powder and your choice of essential oils for flavoring. It is best if you can mix these together in a blender to get the smoothest consistency. Store it in a glass jar and use it on your toothbrush as you would regular toothpaste to brush your teeth with for whitening benefits.
